Anti Terrorist Team
(Counter Revolutionary Warfare Wing)

Each Special Air Service squadron is rotated through Counter Revolutionary Warfare (CRW) Duty known in the regiment as 'The Team', like any squadron they are split into 4 teams of 16 men known as 'special project teams.' The Special Project Teams, "which usually consist of one officer, and 15 other rank… are further divided into four-man assault teams." (A-Z of the S.A.S. p.169-170)
There is a special project team on permanent standby at Credenhill (their new base) ready to react to any terrorist threat and there are unconfirmed rumours that there is always a team on standby in London.

The CRW Wing was formed "following the massacre of Israeli athletes by the Palestinian 'Black September' group at the 1972 Munich Olympics, it was recognised that Britain needed a dedicated hostage-rescue unit to combat the threat of international terrorism. Established at Hereford in 1973… [it] trains every member of the regiments squadrons in all aspects of counter-terrorist skills." (A-Z of the S.A.S. p.42)

Today 'The Team' is the most highly respected anti-terrorist force in the world, their skills are highly sought after around the globe and members can be found all over the world training specialist units of the civil authorities and military in hostage-rescue and anti-terrorism.

Training Facilities
The anti-terrorist team train in Close Quarters Battle (CQB), "a method of fighting the Special Air Service has developed since the early 1960's. It has two forms: armed and unarmed. Armed CQB covers a wide range of pistol and submachine gun techniques. Weapons training starts from the very basics of pistol work and encompasses all the problems of movement and weapons stoppages. It then advances to more advanced techniques using automatic weaponry, rolling movements and both primary and secondary weapons." (S.A.S. - Shadow Warriors. p.47)

"The training facilities available to the Special Air Service are state-of-the-art. Where secrecy is demanded training will normally take place at a hidden location. These are known only by number "Camp One" for example, and the actual name of the location is never mentioned… many of the facilities are in underground bunkers not dissimilar to large underground car parks… Camp one also has a large purpose-built embassy which is used to practise building assaults at various levels. Several full sized aircraft can also be found in the grounds, together with a platform which passes for an oil rig. Bus and train assault options are practised, as are high-speed car drills. There is even a range where live-firing, anti-ambush drills are taught." (S.A.S. - Shadow Warriors. p.124-126)
